What is Shopify and which companies does it suit?

Shopify is an e‑commerce platform run as SaaS: the infrastructure, the updates and the basic upkeep come from the vendor, while the company gets on with selling and growing the store.

The store is extended with apps from the Shopify ecosystem, integrations with the company's systems and custom development where the standard is not enough. The same platform handles B2C and D2C sales, sales to business customers and trading across several markets, each with its own currency, language and price list.

Shopify suits companies that want to cut down how much of their own infrastructure they manage and concentrate on selling. That only holds when it simplifies operations instead of creating new workarounds — a fast store launch should not be the only criterion. The platform has to keep handling the company's sales model even after new markets, channels and customer groups are added.

Shopify most often fits when

  • the company wants to grow D2C sales on a platform run as SaaS,
  • the team needs a panel it can run operationally without friction,
  • the scope of customisation can be matched to Shopify's standards,
  • integrations have clearly defined sources and directions of data exchange,
  • international sales can be organised by market, language and currency,
  • the cost of apps and the plan stays acceptable as the store grows.

Before deciding, you need to check

  • the number of catalogues, price lists and customer types,
  • the B2B order approval process,
  • the structure of products, variants and configurators,
  • how often data syncs with ERP, PIM and WMS,
  • the checkout changes required,
  • the cost of all apps on an annual basis,
  • whether data can be exported and the provider changed later.

How much does a Shopify store cost and how long does it take?

One question can be answered with a number, because the scope is fixed in advance. Everything larger needs the scope settled before a figure is given.

PLN 39,000

net, within 30 days

AURORA SHOPI is a Shopify store build for PLN 39,000 net, delivered within 30 days for a defined scope covering one market and one language. What it includes in full is set out under a Shopify store build in AURORA SHOPI.

What decides the scope of a larger project

  • the number of integrations with ERP, PIM, WMS and marketing tools
  • custom features that go beyond what the platform does as standard
  • the number of markets the store has to sell in
  • the number of language versions and how translations are run
  • the extent of UX/UI work, from a theme matched to the brand to a design from scratch
  • migrating data off the current platform, along with SEO and redirects
  • B2B or D2C requirements: catalogues, price lists, company accounts, order processes

The timeline follows the same factors as the cost, plus how quickly decisions are made and materials come back from your side. We prepare the estimate once the scope is settled — before that it would be guesswork.

Shopify or Shopify Plus — which plan should you choose?

The plan is not a technical decision but a consequence of what the store actually needs: which features, at what sales volume, and across how many catalogues and customer types.

  • Standard Shopify plans

They handle B2C and D2C sales, multiple markets, language versions and currencies, apps from the ecosystem and integrations through the API. They also carry the basic features for selling to business customers — B2B on Shopify does not automatically require the Plus plan.

    • B2C and D2C sales with no feature limits imposed by the plan
    • selling across multiple markets, languages and currencies
    • basic B2B features, narrower in scope than on Plus
    • integrations through the API and apps from the Shopify ecosystem
  • Shopify Plus

It answers scale and depth, not the mere fact of selling wholesale. It makes sense where B2B operations are extensive, the organisation is large, and the requirements go beyond what the lower plans allow you to change.

    • a wider range of B2B features: catalogues, price lists and terms for many companies
    • more freedom to change the purchase process and the checkout
    • higher operational limits and broader process automation
    • support for large organisations and complex sales structures

What each Shopify plan covers moves as the platform develops, so we confirm the current limits at the offer stage rather than from what applied on the last project.

A Shopify build in practice — the Słodka Manufaktura case study

The Słodka Manufaktura online store on Shopify

A Shopify store with a product configurator

Słodka Manufaktura

Customers had to choose size, flavour, filling, decorations and extras, and the price depended on those decisions, so a standard product page wasn't enough. In Shopify we built a configurator that walks the customer through ordering a cake, calculating size, portions, weight and chosen extras before showing the order price. The project also included a proprietary loyalty programme linking online purchases with in-store sales.

  • a product configurator driven by multiple parameters,
  • automatic price calculation,
  • an online and offline loyalty programme,
  • a content structure supporting local SEO.

FAQ — Shopify, implementation and growth

These answers cover choosing the platform and the right path. You'll find detailed questions about each service on its own subpage.

A fixed-scope build costs PLN 39,000 net — that is the price of AURORA SHOPI for one market and one language. On larger projects the cost depends on the number of integrations, custom features, markets and language versions, the extent of UX/UI work, data migration, and B2B or D2C requirements. The estimate comes once the scope is settled.

In AURORA SHOPI the store is ready to sell within 30 days, because the scope is fixed in advance. A custom build takes longer, and the timeline follows the same factors as the cost — most of all the number of integrations and the extent of design work. How quickly decisions and materials come back from your side matters just as much.

The plan should follow the features required, the sales volume, the number of catalogues, the customer structure and the integrations. Standard plans handle B2C and D2C sales, multiple markets and the basic B2B features — selling to business customers does not automatically require Plus. Shopify Plus gives a wider range of B2B features, more freedom to change the purchase process and higher operational limits, so it makes sense with extensive operations and large organisations.

Shopify takes infrastructure off the company's hands and shortens the road to launch, but the scope of change stays within what the platform allows. Magento 2 gives full control over the architecture and the code, at the cost of your own technical capacity and a higher cost of ownership. What decides is whether the company's processes fit inside Shopify's architecture — not the size of the catalogue.

Yes. Shopify lets you manage URLs, titles, descriptions, headings, structured data, the sitemap and redirects, and blog content and categories can be developed as on any other platform. The limits are mainly in the URL structure, which the platform partly imposes. When migrating to Shopify, the map of old and new addresses and the 301 redirects are what matter most — we cover that under migrating a store to Shopify.

The number of products alone doesn't decide the platform. You need to check the variant structure, data source, update frequency, search, integrations and how the offer is managed. A large catalogue can work well on Shopify if the data architecture is properly planned.

Yes. You can run D2C and B2B sales in one store or split the two models. The choice depends on catalogues, price lists, payment terms, markets and how the sales team works. Some features depend on the Shopify plan.

Yes, through APIs, apps or dedicated integration layers. Before implementation you need to determine which system is the source of each kind of data, how often it syncs and how errors are handled.

Magento 2 is worth considering for highly custom sales processes, extensive B2B, many interdependent rules and a need for greater control over the architecture. The decision should also factor in budget and the company's capacity to maintain a more complex platform.

The scope is built after analysing the data, URLs, integrations, customer accounts, order history and features of the current platform. A migration map, SEO redirects, data tests and a launch plan follow. See the Shopify migration page for details.

AURORA SHOPI has a standardised scope for companies whose requirements fit the package. An individual implementation is needed for extensive UX, unusual integrations, a complex catalogue or processes beyond that scope.

Yes, that's what Shopify maintenance is for. Before starting work we check the theme, apps, integrations, how changes are made and the list of current issues. The scope of the takeover is confirmed after a store audit.
