The key facts about the project

Magento 2.4.3

The version of Magento 2 the store ran on was upgraded — from 2.2.1 to 2.4.3.

REST API

A new way of communicating with SAP and BaseLinker, in place of CSV file exchange.

2 new options

Checkout changes: delivery to a different address, and a tax ID field once a VAT invoice is chosen.

YouLead

A new system for e-mail marketing, rolled out together with an integration of web push.

Technology

Magento 2, REST API, SAP, BaseLinker, YouLead, web push.

Project scope

  • upgrading Magento
  • changing how the store communicates with SAP and BaseLinker
  • building the product bundle feature
  • integrating an import of Google reviews
  • rolling out the YouLead system
  • adding new shipping methods
  • adapting the checkout to the user
  • integrating multi-select filtering

The existing store needed an upgrade and further development

The store ran on Magento 2.2.1. That out-of-date version of the platform limited how actively it could be developed with new features. The upgrade to 2.4.3 was needed to extend the site further and to keep Adobe's support in protecting it against cyberattacks.

The way the store communicated with external systems needed to change as well. SAP and BaseLinker had been exchanging data through CSV files.

E-mail marketing was the next area. The tool Krosno had been using did not meet the company's functional requirements, so it was replaced with the YouLead system.

The project also covered developing the features available to the store's users further — from product bundles and delivery methods to the checkout and product filtering.

Before the project

  • a store on Magento 2.2.1
  • limited room to develop the platform with new features
  • data exchange with SAP and BaseLinker based on CSV files
  • an e-mail marketing tool that did not meet the company's functional requirements

The main areas that needed to change

  • 01

    Upgrading Magento 2

Magento 2.2.1 limited how actively the platform could be developed with further features. The upgrade to 2.4.3 also required the store to be adapted to the platform's new settings.

  • 02

Changing how SAP and BaseLinker communicate

Data exchange with the external tools was based on CSV files. The project scope covered making communication over REST API possible.

  • 03

    Changing the e-mail marketing tool

The tool used until then did not meet Krosno's functional requirements. The project rolled out the YouLead system, which also made an integration of web push possible.

  • 04

Developing the shopping path and the store's features

The work covered product bundles, new shipping methods, checkout changes, an automatic import of Google reviews and multi-select filtering.

The scope of the work carried out

The work covered both the store's technology layer and its communication with external systems, and the features tied directly to the offer, to marketing and to the shopping path. These points describe the scope, not a confirmed order of delivery.

  1. 01

    Upgrading Magento to 2.4.3

The store was upgraded from Magento 2.2.1 to 2.4.3. Adapting the platform to its new settings deactivated some earlier features that had lost their purpose. The planned upgrade process also covered restoring the store to the right shape.

  2. 02

    Moving communication onto REST API

The previous data exchange through CSV files was replaced with the option of SAP and BaseLinker communicating over REST API.

  3. 03

    Building product bundles

We delivered a feature for preparing bundles with their own artwork, description and prices, different from those of the individual products. The bundles were connected directly to the warehouse system.

  4. 04

    Developing the marketing features

We integrated an automatic import of Google reviews and rolled out the YouLead system. Using YouLead also made an integration of web push possible.

  5. 05

New shipping methods and checkout changes

We extended the delivery options available and changed the checkout. Delivery to an address other than the billing one became possible, as did entering a tax ID once the VAT invoice option is ticked.

  6. 06

    Multi-select filtering

We delivered a feature that lets several filters be selected at once while searching for products.

Magento 2 and the systems connected to it

The project changed how the store communicates with SAP and BaseLinker, connected product bundles to the warehouse system, and delivered features tied to Google reviews and the YouLead system.

The diagram shows only the relations the source material describes. For SAP and BaseLinker it states neither the scope nor the direction of the data exchange, because the material does not define them — which is why those wires carry no direction.

  • SAPData exchange moved from CSV files onto communication over REST API.
  • BaseLinkerData exchange moved from CSV files onto communication over REST API.
  • Warehouse systemConnected directly to product bundles. Selling a bundle reduces the stock of its component products.
  • GoogleAn automatic import of reviews posted on Google into the store.
  • YouLeadE-mail marketing, analysis of customer behaviour and monitoring of campaign activity.
  • Web pushA feature integrated thanks to the YouLead system.

Moving communication from CSV files onto REST API

SAP and BaseLinker had been exchanging data through CSV files. The project made communication over REST API possible.

What the change involved

  1. 01Data exchange with SAP and BaseLinker had been running through CSV files.
  2. 02Communication over REST API was made possible.
  3. 03The new arrangement made it easier to modify the integrations and extend them with further information.
  4. 04REST API messages made it possible to programme specific actions to run when a discrepancy is detected.
  5. 05The arrangement also made it possible to define the data structure and the format of the information each field accepts.

After

Changing how the systems communicate laid the ground for modifying and developing the integrations more easily. REST API also made it possible to handle specific errors and to define the structure of the data being passed.

The features delivered in the Krosno store

Six features the development work covered — from product bundles and Google reviews to the checkout and filtering.

Product bundles connected to the warehouse system

We delivered the option of preparing bundles made up of several products. A bundle can have its own artwork, description and prices, different from those of the individual items. It was also connected directly to the warehouse system, which records the sale and reduces the stock of the products making up the composition.

The “Komplet do wina Harmony (3 el.)” bundle page in the Krosno store on a laptop and a phone: its own photograph of the composition, a price of 99.99 zł, an add-to-basket button and parameters including the number of items.
A product bundle in the Krosno store.

An automatic import of Google reviews

We integrated an automatic import of reviews posted on Google. Users can read them without leaving the store.

YouLead and web push

The tool Krosno had been using did not meet the company's functional requirements, so the YouLead system was rolled out. Its features cover developing the marketing funnel, analysing customer behaviour and monitoring user activity during e-mail marketing campaigns. Using YouLead also made an integration of web push possible.

New shipping methods

We extended the choice of how products can be delivered. Among the new methods the source material names are Poczta Polska, Pocztex24, Paczkomat parcel lockers and DHL Parcelshop.

A checkout adapted to the user

The existing checkout was changed using a bespoke module. Users can now give delivery details different from the billing address, and enter the company tax ID only once the “I want a VAT invoice” option is ticked.

Multi-select filtering

We delivered the option of selecting several filters at once. The feature shortened the time needed to find products matching precisely defined requirements.

An upgraded platform and a store developed further

The project ended with Magento upgraded to 2.4.3, the communication with SAP and BaseLinker changed, and further features delivered around the offer, marketing, delivery and the shopping path.

The new delivery methods widened the choice of how products can be collected. The checkout changes and the remaining development work were named as measures reducing the risk of carts being abandoned at the point of ordering.

We give no percentages and no sales, conversion or revenue figures — the source material does not carry them.
